What is the difference between a web log and a website?
Which is better for a starting webmaster?

A webmaster sent us the questions above in response to our article ‘What would you like to read in our Blog?’ You’ll find the answers below.

What is the difference between a web log and a website?
The main difference between a web log or ‘Blog’, for short, and a website, is that a Blog is regularly updated with new items, sometimes several times per day or week. The latest item is placed in such a way that visitors read it the first, with earlier items below it (either in their entirety or as links to an archive).

The free software of the popular WordPress, a blog tool and publication platform, offers many possibilities to maintain ‘regular’ websites. This has given the blog software a second life. The software is often used by webmasters to offer their customers a budget friendly website that is easy for them to update and adjust. The software is available in various languages and offers many fun and free Widgets (desktop applications) such as a Chatroom, Online agenda, Polling, etc..

If you opt for a ‘regular’ website instead of a Blog, the site is of a more static nature. There is no continuous flow of new items. In many cases a regular website is used as an online business card and a source of information for visitors.

Which is better for a starting webmaster?
This question is difficult to answer. It’s all about what the customer wants, after all. What kind of website does he or she want to build?

The customer can opt for a static or a dynamic website. A static website generally consists of an overview of products and services, often a ‘brochure’ or personal website. Maintenance is done offline.

A dynamic website offers visitors the possibility of sending data to the site or searching data in a database. An online shop and a Blog are two examples of a dynamic website. This type of websites is usually maintained online using a Content Management System.

Even if you don’t know much about it you can build a properly functioning and attractive website. Use WordPress for a Blog and download a template (either free or paid for). In this way you can give your website an excellent look and good functionalities.

If you opt for a website, use a program like Microsoft Frontpage or Dreamweaver. Make sure it has WYSIWYG editor, which will allow you to use themes.
